As Strength & Conditioning Coach for their 2014-2015 season, I designed and implemented uOttawa's Women's Hockey team's Strength, SAQ and Cardio training programs.
"It was a pleasure to work with Mike last season, he brought his strong knowledge and a professional attitude to our program. We feel that he cares a lot for every student-athlete and was always available to support and guide them."
Entraineur-chef , Directeur de programme|Head coach , Program manager
"As a Basketball player, playing at an elite university level, I need to make sure I can come to practice and compete everyday. I am currently playing basketball with the University of York Lions. I contacted Mike in hopes to become a better more improved basketball player. Before our sessions had began I was already an athletic individual, but to ensure my success at the University level, I had improve even more. Throughout my sessions with Mike, he showed me that there is always room for improvement. I went to him looking to improve my vertical leap, my flexibility and my overall strength. I came out, with improvements not only in my vertical leap, flexibility and my strength but also my VO2Max, which is a big part of practice everyday. This level of men's basketball demands that you are in shape and capable of competing everyday. Mike has helped me reach my goals and has also given me the knowledge I need to further improve myself, for example, nutrition, workout secrets., and basically how the the body works. Whether you are in poor shape looking to make a lifestyle change or an elite athlete looking to make improvements, Mike can show you that it can be done. He will help you attain your goals but more importantly how to maintain them. Thank you Mike for everything you have done, I wouldn't be competing at this level if it wasn't for you."
Aaron Rados, York University Guard, Canadian Interuniversity Sports, Ottawa Ontario.
"As a hockey player playing at an elite level, our son Alec was helped tremendously in the off-season by Mike to improve not only the physical aspects of his game such as strength, endurance, and agility, but also learned about proper nutrition and how to train appropriately, both during the summer and the hockey season. Mike was able to assess the areas that Alec needed help in and work on them over the summer, allowing him to continue to play hockey at the Junior A level that he is capable of. Thanks very much for everything Mike!"
"As a full time martial artist, I have to maintain a certain level of conditioning. I contacted Mike to improve my fitness level to become a better athlete in the ring (kickboxing, MMA, Grappling) and a better martial artist. Within 6 weeks only, I have seen my general physical performance skyrocket!!!
In my sparring sessions, this has translated in me being quicker, stronger and more agile. My footwork and timing has improved. I am able to keep my focus for a longer period of time and most importantly I have been able to keep the same high intensity of training throughout the length of the sparring sessions.
Mike’s approach to conditioning makes what usually would be a dreading hour, a very informative and fun one. I was looking forward to our sessions every time. The workouts are sport specific, always different and they don’t require expensive machines, only your bodyweight and some ingenuity. Workouts that can easily be done at home with a basic fitness set.
During the sessions, we talked about the dos and don’ts of every exercise. We talked about nutrition and weight cutting. He emphasized on the importance of not only attaining goals but also maintaining them. He keeps you interested and motivated to reach those goals.
Whether you are a serious athlete getting ready for an event, or you are just looking to get in better shape to improve your health and your lifestyle; Mike is the guy to go to."
Melhem Wehbé, Canadian and Provincial Weight Class Champion and Dojo Director, 100% Martial Arts & Fitness, Embrun ON
"As the coach of a U16 girls 2013 ringette team, I was looking for a dryland program that would improve the overall fitness levels of my athletes for the season and Mike Kelly of We Mean Fitness provided this and more. At this age level, I was hoping to instill in my athletes that regular exercise will not only make them better athletes but improve their daily lives. Mike incorporated exercises the girls could do at home regularly into our sessions along with healthy lifestyle tips. As a coach I can see the improvement in my athletes core strength and flexibility which has resulted in success on the scoreboard. I would not hesitate to leave the dryland training of any team I coach to Mike at We Mean Fitness."
"Mike on behalf of the U13 2009 Cumberland Cobras Premier boys’ team including all the coaches - thank you. I think the boys will remember much of what you taught over the 12 sessions, and the experience has given the coaching staff additional insight into exercise drills and fitness techniques to use for their conditioning. You showed the boys how to do proper drills, e.g., eye/hand coordination, balancing, jumping and landing properly, etc., that are especially pertinent to soccer (as well as for fitness in general), and provided them with foundational knowledge why they should do them correctly; all along emphasizing the importance of maintaining a fit lifestyle if they just continuing to do the simple, challenging, exercises. You are a passionate fitness trainer and teacher and it shows in how you prepared for the sessions and applied yourself during demonstrations. I would definitely use your expertise again in the future.
"Mike, on behalf of the coaches and U14 2010 boys, thank you very much, and it was a pleasure. You are a professional in your field and you have an approachable demeanor. You always came well prepared, with definite objectives in mind from the start of the sesssions to the end. At the same time, you were flexible in adjusting to the situation, e.g., number of participants, facility change. Your method to include knowledge impartation with the fitness drills and exercises worked very well. This year, with more maturity, the boys got much more out of these conditioning sessions. ALL of them showed definite fitness improvements.
“I contacted Mike because I was having difficulty challenging myself to the level I needed to pass the “PARE” entry test for the RCMP. I tried training by myself and I asked around for advice on exercises I should be doing to get ready but it wasn't working for me. I didn't like to go to the gym by myself because I never knew what to do exactly and I never kept with an exercise plan long enough or didn't push myself hard enough to see results. Mike met with me right away when I contacted him. He told me straight out that it would be a challenging goal to get me fit in one month to pass this type of test BUT that it was attainable. I got into this wanting to succeed but didn't really know if it was actually possible for me.
Mike made working out fun. He introduced me to new exercises and he’d explain the kinetic aspects as so to better teach proper technique. He would push me to levels that I didn't even know I could achieve. He gave me great advice on how to get focused on how to achieve something that is difficult. He’s a very focused kind of guy and he was very attentive at all times during your session. I never felt that he couldn’t care less that I passed the PARE test or not – he was very dedicated on my success and I needed that. It's kind of weird, it's like he knew inside and out what I needed to achieve my goal. From my muscles, my breathing, my brain, my guts and in my heart, he knew how to bring out the best in me.
YES! I passed. I didn't just pass, I got a really good time. I am amazed at what I’ve achieved. This experience will stay with me for ever and it did change my life and now I can go on with my dream of becoming a police officer. Wow! I will for ever be grateful for Mike to have taken my goal so seriously, for all the time and dedication that he put into my training. MERCI!”

"After months of training for the PREP (Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police), I realized I could no longer do it on my own. Although I was in decent shape, I needed to up my fitness level. Until that point I had been guessing at what exercises I should be doing to successfully pass the PREP. After the very first session with Mike I learned a lot. Working out was no longer a guessing game!
Mike explained to me that, as a female, passing the PREP would be a lot more challenging and that in order to do so I would need to become a "fit chick."Mike pushed me, encouraged me, and showed me some fun stuff along the way (things such as skipping, and being able to kneel on an exercise ball!). Mike was just as dedicated to passing the PREP as I was. It's because of him, I am proud to say, that I am one fit chick, and that I am able to pass the PREP."
“On the eve of turning 54 years of age, I did not like the direction my body was taking. With the assistance of Mike Kelly at We Mean Fitness (www.wemeanfitness.com), all the guess work was taken out of losing fat and establishing realistic and attainable goals towards a leaner body. Using state of the art Ultrasound technology to do a body fat scan analysis, along with Mike's help establishing a baseline fitness level, I now know where I stand. I also have a better understanding of what it takes to maintain a caloric deficit to lose fat as well as being able to monitor future improvements with my fitness levels. I can recommend We Mean Fitness to anyone interested in improving their health, losing fat and to anyone frustrated with trying to determine how and how much to lose. We Mean Fitness is an excellent one-stop shop to eliminate the guess work for improving one's health and fitness."
"I had always considered working with a personal trainer a ‘self-indulgence’… until I started working with Mike Kelly. After 3 months with Mike, I now call it an ‘investment’ in myself that I can no longer live without. He has rekindled my interest in fitness and provided me so many different ways to keep and stay in shape. He encourages me to push my limits and try new activities. He has found ways to keep me thinking about my health between sessions. His holistic approach encompasses flexibility, diet, sleep, strength, cardiovascular fitness and more. Every session with Mike is different and interesting and most of all, fun. He makes me laugh which is so important to my vision of keeping fit. I have new respect for weights, for balance activities and cardio. I could not live without my skipping rope and BOSU ball anymore! Most of all, Mike has motivated me to keep physical fitness a priority in my life for the long-term."
"When I started looking around for a personal trainer, I was disappointed with what I found. Based on Internet searches, the personal trainer community in Ottawa seemed to consist of guys who were vying for the Mr. Universe contest – muscles on top of muscles on top of muscles. And a lot of pictures to prove it. From my experience in the martial arts, I knew however that most “big muscle” guys were surprisingly weak in their cardiovascular ability, flexibility and even in certain elements of more functional strength. I wasn’t interested in bench pressing 400 lbs but I did want to lose some weight, tune up my stamina, flexibility and all-around functional strength.
Then I happened upon Mike's website. Instead of endless ego-stroking pictures of muscles, I saw photos that demonstrated Mike’s incredible all-around fitness – his ability to balance on an exercise ball is nothing short of amazing. I was further heartened by Mike’s credentials. He trains other personal trainers and has an incredible depth of knowledge that spans the fitness spectrum from stretching to strength training to diet. I promptly called Mike and realized immediately that I’d made the right decision. In our first meeting, we agreed upon some fitness goals. We next set some benchmarks to measure our progress. Over a three month period, I hit all my goals, losing almost 20 pounds, gaining a lot of strength in my areas of weakness, improving my flexibility and broadening my knowledge and understanding of fitness and health. Throughout, Mike was supportive, enthusiastic and helpful with tips and suggestions to improve my home-based workouts. Perhaps most importantly, my experience with Mike was not only beneficial from a fitness perspective but enriching from a knowledge and experience perspective – I now feel equipped to make the kind of permanent change to my lifestyle that until now has eluded me. And I know Mike will be there down the line to help me when I need it. Thanks Mike."
I'd like to thank you for the personal training you've been giving me for the past few months. I had been really discouraged with my fitness after injuring my ACL and the subsequent surgery. I soon found that my own knowledge of training and fitness was not sufficient. But, with your help, I now have the confidence to resume an active lifestyle and play sports again! Your understanding of health and fitness and your personal, professional approach are extraordinary! I am more fit now than I was before the injury!
"I've had to opportunity of knowing Mike for a number years while at the Ottawa Athletic Club. In addition to his teaching Spinning classes here, he has served as a valuable asset to the club as one of its Personal Trainers. I know Mike to be knowledgeable, conscientious and thorough in all of his efforts with our clientele. We can always count on Mike to set up Personal Trainer programs that result in consistently positive feedback. I would highly recommend Mike for any fitness related endeavour he might choose to be involved in, as I know he would do a great job!"
Lisa Refausse, (Former) Fitness Director,The Ottawa Athletic Club
"We started working with Mike 3 months ago. What we both needed was a kickstart to our exercise programs that would help us achieve our overall goal of healthier living. Mike has done that for us and more. He has designed programs for us that work within our schedules and our abilities. He discusses nutrition, weight loss, sleep patterns and other factors that contribute to a healthy lifestyle. It’s not all about the weight or the muscles. Most importantly, Mike motivates us to keep going when fatigue sets in, and he helps us to realize how much we are capable of doing. We have both noticed a real difference over time, and we plan on continuing with Mike down this healthy road we are on."
Dr. Gillian Buckley and Don Andersen, Ottawa Canada
"I originally met Mike Kelly at one of his spin classes and I found him very approachable and helpful with any questions I asked. It was clear that he had an extensive knowledge of personal fitness and his pleasant demeanor made him a great choice for a personal trainer. Throughout our training sessions, Mike was very focused on developing a training routine to suit my needs and was very careful that I fully understood the proper technique and rationale for each exercise. Mike has developed a very comprehensive fitness program that aims to improve my overall fitness. Throughout the course of our training sessions, Mike also managed to sprinkle in a lot of useful knowledge about proper nutrition and hydration to support the more physical aspects of training. I look forward to making further progress and attaining my fitness goals with Mike’s skilled assistance. Thanks Mike!"
Ken Garson, Cancer Researcher, Ottawa Health Research Institute, Ottawa Canada
"When I have worked with different trainers I have sometimes encountered a "my way or the highway" approach. Mike has worked with my wife and I, and has been highly responsive in providing a varied approach in training advice and support in response to our different approaches, strengths and objectives. Mike has been particularly effecitive in providing conditioning support which suited my approach and changing personal requirements. Mike has helped to provide that extra focus which has maintained my momentum which has been lost on other occasions."
Peter Wells, Human Factors Consultant, Honors Degree in Kinesiology and Psychology, Ottawa Canada
"I've known Mike Kelly to be not only an excellent Personal Trainer, but also someone who is passionate about what he does. His clientele tends to be "long termers", as he is able to continually challenge them and keep their interest over a long period of time. Mike is both dynamic and personable when he presents concepts to others, thus making their learning experience more enjoyable and longer lasting. As such, I would have no hesitation in highly recommending Mike to anyone requiring such."
Sylvie D'Aoust, (Former) Fitness Manager Ray Friel Recreational Center, Ottawa Canada
"When I met Mike Kelly for the first time it was a transition from a prior personal trainer. The transition was rather like the sun coming out on a rainy day. Mike has integrity, is committed, and has dedicated himself to life long learning in the science of health. You will find him respectful, diligent, committed and highly capable. I do not doubt that Mike will take a holistic approach to your personal training needs. He will appraise the body, the mind and the fuel you eat and drink. He will carefully consider any lifestyle circumstances that you care to share and that may affect your health. Without question Mike will respect your privacy, teach you as much or as little as you want to know and devise a program personally for you.
I would not hesitate to recommend Mike as a personal trainer if you seek improved health and sense of well being."

"In the past 3 years, I have been a co-worker and a supervisor for Mike Kelly. In this time we have worked together scheduling and educating school groups in the area of fitness, including cardio and strength components. Mike has an excellent teaching manner as he gives clear concise directions, and is confident and dynamic in his delivery. As a personal trainer, Mike is invaluable to his clients. He consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that his clients are successful, by giving them updates on current health and fitness issues, and calling them to check in on their progress.
Mike is a true professional in the industry. He returns calls and emails promptly, jumps in to help co-workers when they need last minute help and reads any and all new fitness related materials that he can get his hands on. He even finds time to drop by my office and give me tips on proper posture.
"I had been working out at another gym for about a year when I decided to move my membership to the OAC. Ifelt that I had a good handle on working out but I decided to enlist the services of a trainer to familiarize myself with the equipment and the club, never thinking that I would want more than one session. After that initial session with Mike Kelly I knew that he was not your average trainer, and I knew that I could learn so much more from him. His extensive knowledge of fitness, nutrition, sports and weight training coupled with his patience, humour, commitment to client, and professionalism made our sessions so enjoyable that it was never a chore to come to the gym. Good health is the most important investment you can give yourself, and Mike Kelly was my investment in me!"
"Mike, this is a note to say thank you for helping me get started on my new fitness routine. Your introductory sessions have given me an excellent foundation to build a fitter lifestyle. As an overweight man in my late fifties with diabetes and a reasonably sedate lifestyle, I am keenly aware of the potential health hazards that lie ahead so I am taking this very seriously. The program you developed for me is challenging but manageable and I can feel the results even after such a short time. What I especially like about working with you is that you listen keenly and adapt your teaching to my needs. That is a special talent in itself and makes the whole process highly motivating. Thanks again and I will be in touch soon to make an appointment for our next sessions. "
"Mike is an individual who wears many hats and one of them is to train individuals to effectively achieve their goals. Each goal is identified and a realistic individualized program created to address those goals. Mike is very patient and a good motivator. I'm very glad that I had him as a trainer because it was amazing to have someone there who could make going to the gym fun yet make me understand that fitness is a part of life that should not be neglected but incorporated with what I do in my daily life."
"In January I had the pleasure to have my training sessions with Mike Kelly. This e-mail is to inform you that I was treated with great respect and in a very professional manner by Mike. He was able in those 3 meetings to put together a good training program for me. Mike is very congenial, enthusiastic, health conscious and most of all he is very knowledgeable. He puts you right at ease! I would recommend him to anyone who needs a consultation or a personal trainer. Just thought you might want to know! Congratulations to the OAC for having him on board!"
Mr. JEAN E. DUVAL, Account Manager, CHUM Radio, Ottawa Canada
"I was looking to update my fitness knowledge, receive some pointers on my technique and of course get some additional inspiration. I got all of these from Mike in our sessions. I found Mike to be a conscientious and informative personal trainer. He was clear and thorough in his instruction. I feel that he has set up a program that will help me attain my fitness goals."
I am writing to thank you for the outstanding training assistance you gave me in recent weeks. When I came to see you, I was suffering a left leg injury that had lasted 10 years with no relief. I had been to see several physiotherapists, sports medicine doctors, and chiropractors in this period. However, none of the routines they prescribed worked.
Finally, your assistance has brought results. The balance of resistance training, cardio, and stretching that you prescribed for me has had an effect I would describe as nothing short of miraculous, considering that I was resigned to the possibility of having this pain for a lifetime. It seems the injury is mostly scar or weak tissue related, and you have figured out a work-out regime for me that addresses this injury precisely. It is tailored specifically for my injury. In particular, your approach to training – thorough, patient, and informative – really helped in ensuring that we identified the problem precisely and made the most of the time. In addition, I very much appreciate the advise you have given me on matters related to training, such as hydration intake, rest, diet, and having an overall balanced lifestyle. I have also very much benefited from your efforts to do follow-up. Your e-mails and telephone calls to check on my progress and offer additional advice are greatly appreciated. Above all, your program has given me a real senses of "new lease on life" since I now feel empowered and capable of effecting a successful rehabilitation, which I have not experienced before in the 10 years that this injury has lasted. As a result, I am very committed to the program you set out for me, and anticipate having future sessions with you to refine my program.
I would absolutely recommend your services to any other athletes or individuals seeking a program tailored to their particular requirement. Feel free to use this letter, or quote from it, in any promotional or media related material as you require. Thanks again, Mike.
"After lifting weights for about a year, I wanted to progress to free weights and bulk up! But I was also hurting myself, concerned about overtraining, and frustrated not knowing what I wanted. I was trying a squat for maybe the third time and happened to perform one right in front of Mike Kelly. I learned enough in the next 15 minutes to convince me that this was the fellow for the job. I went for as basic a go-round as I could and still came away with much more than I expected. Mike gave me a lot of useful information. His other skills come to fore: along with a customized workout steering me away from my likely disastrous bulking routine, we discussed weight, nutrition, flexibility, cardio,... and perhaps the most important, recovery from and preventing injury.
I have been working out at a gym consistently for about 12 years now. As a young man of 19 I was introduced to weight lifting briefly and for various reasons did not pursue it. Roughly 12 years later I followed an excellent YMCA conditioning program for a couple of years and stopped. At the age of 50, largely at the suggestion of my son, we both got serious. Then the whole family got involved. Today, my daughter and I remain steady gym rats. For the first 5 years I worked out 3 to 4 times a week with a variety of personal trainers; they were all quite expert in their field, a couple quite exceptional at their craft. Since that time I have continued on my own, researching information, developing further and making consistent, steady and measureable improvements in my strength and fitness.
All this is to establish that I feel confident in saying that when it comes to working out at a gym, and evaluating personal training and trainers, well? I know what good is.
My mother is over 90, lives in Ottawa on her own, and through a variety of issues mainly I believe, centering on poor nutrition, hydration, and no exercise, she ended up in twice in hospital the past three or four years. I concluded she needed supervised exercise. Load bearing exercise. Not walking down the street, or gentle calisthenics, but a properly assessed and managed approach to fitness a comprehensive weight training based program.
The doctors wanted to put her in a home. Imagine.
Where to find a personal trainer and get my mum exercising? Not easy. As I no longer live in Ottawa, I searched through my gym contacts in Toronto for recommendations for personal trainers in Ottawa. Came up blank. I called most of the gyms in the area, got some fairly stout sales pitches. Came up empty. Then through Google I came up with an email address for a Mike Kelly, PTS, among other names; Mike Kelly emailed me back.
Mike Kelly seemed like the real deal. Certainly he talked the talk over the internet. So I travelled up to Ottawa to meet him. He seemed to walk the talk. There remained two hurdles: could I convince my mother to start a fitness program with Mike, and would he live up to my expectations? You will be happy to hear: Yes! on both counts.
After the first six months, my mother continues to enjoy her workouts, shows dramatic strength improvement, and (this is the real test of a personal trainer) has not gotten hurt, and does not want to stop exercising. You can be sure in fact that Mike has exceeded my expectations, and has shown an enormous reserve of patience with his clients.
I recommend Mike Kelly to anyone seriously interested in establishing, improving or developing their fitness. Mike Kelly is the real deal.
